ILE modular system by Foster + Partners for Benchmark

Dezeen Showroom: Foster + Partners Industrial Design brings craft to adaptable office furniture with the solid wood ILE modular system, created for British brand Benchmark.

The ILE modular system consists of several wooden elements that can be placed back to back or alongside one another for a continuous look.

The ILE modular system is made of solid wood

The modules include benches, tables, shelves, lockers and planters, all of which are joined with a timber fixing strip with hidden keyhole fittings that can be connected and separated with ease.

“Our ambition was to create a highly flexible, solid timber system that can be easily reconfigured – while simultaneously embodying the high level of craft and quality that Benchmark is known for,” said Foster + Partners Industrial Design head Mike Holland.

Sustainability was also a priority, with Foster + Partners making use of what the studio calls two “underutilised” types of hardwood, American red oak and British ash, as well as fabric or leather upholstery and naturally fire retardant sheep’s wool filling for the benches.

The ILE modular system can be completed with power sockets and lighting rails, as well as a matching portable media stand that doubles as a display board.
