As part of its ongoing Icons series, Airbnb has created a life-size rental version of a Polly Pocket compact toy, which includes mock-up versions of clothing and oversized furniture.
Located in Littleton, Massachusetts the rental was created to resemble a full-scale version of a Mattel Polly Pocket toy, a series of small plastic compacts that contained themed environments inhabited by a doll.
Airbnb’s rental was styled as a 90’s sleepover, where guests can “get ready at Polly’s vanity”, try on clothing from the doll’s closet, hang out in the living room, and craft with a variety of provided supplies.
“Polly Pocket is becoming an Airbnb host and opening her vintage-themed, two-story Slumber Party Fun compact to celebrate her 35th birthday,” said Airbnb. “The newest addition to Airbnb’s Icons Category, Polly Pocket’s 42-foot-tall compact takes adventure to new heights.”
The rental is composed of an open-air platform and a towering 42-foot (12.8 metres) back wall, modelled to resemble an open compact, as well as a small “tent” where guests sleep.
Visitors enter up a series of steps and into a living room, which contains toy-like furniture in shades of monochrome teal, magenta, and lavender purple, organised around a yellow rug.
Books, a telephone and other accessories are also strewn about the space.
A teal door leads to Polly’s closet, where scarves, dresses and more hang along a back wall. A floor-length mirror sits on each side, connected by a long runner rug.
An entryway located below the “hinge” of the compact leads up to the two-storey back wall, which features terraces lined with pink fencing that looks over the living room.
A vanity, with a drawer stocked with craft supplies, sits on the first level next to a house “plant” and a faux staircase, which runs up to the ceiling.
A staircase in the back of the compact leads onto the second storey which contains a kitchen stacked with monochrome dishes, a small table and a large, “refrigerator” with operable doors.
“I know what you’re thinking: ‘Polly, why is your fridge so giant?'” said the Airbnb listing. “How else would I store a slumber party’s worth of Ring Pops, Push Pops, and Baby Bottle Pops?”
Outside of the main structure, small round “stones” lead to a purple tent, where overnight guests sleep in a row of magenta sleeping bags.
At night, the compact lights up in a lavender hue but does not close.
The Polly Pocket rental is only available to rent from 12 to 14 September, at $89 (£70) per guest.
It is an addition to Airbnb’s collection of Icons, a set of temporary experiences and places by the platform that has included a stay at a mock-up of the house from Pixar’s Up, as well as a stay in the clock tower of the Musée d’Orsay during the 2024 Olympic Games opening in Paris.
The series was announced earlier this year, with Airbnb planning to continually roll-out additional rentals.
