Angel Reese, Brittney Griner, and 3 Unrivaled players who raised their stock

Unrivaled, the new professional 3-on-3 offseason women’s basketball that launched this January, is nearing the end of its inaugural season. Over the past 8 weeks, more than 40 WNBA players competed in full-court 3-on-3 basketball in Miami, as a means of supplementing their WNBA income and continuing to develop as players in the offseason.

The regular season concludes on March 10th, with playoffs wrapping up on March 17th.

Some players had lackluster seasons, whether due to injury, performance, or otherwise. But several walk away from the winter league much-improved, having shown to the world what they’re capable of when given the opportunity. Some, like Napheesa Collier, were excellent — but they were already considered some of the best players in the world entering the offseason.

Here are 5 players who raised their stock in Unrivaled this offseason.

Angel Reese, Rose Club

Angel Reese had a great rookie season, breaking the league’s all-time single-season double-double record and establishing herself as the WNBA’s top rebounder.

Still, she took another leap at Unrivaled this offseason. Reese is averaging 13 points and 12.3 rebounds on a Rose Club that has surprised many by becoming just the second team to clinch a playoff berth. Her 12.3 rebounds per game are a league-best, and her finishing around the basket has greatly improved. Reese has also showcased her defensive versatility in the 3-on-3 environment. Most recently, in a Monday win against the Laces, Reese tallied 16 points on 7-14 FG, 15 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Skylar Diggins-Smith, Lunar Owls Club

Skylar Diggins-Smith has a storied resume; she’s a six-time WNBA All-Star and four-time All-WNBA First Team member. But, after sitting out the 2023 season due to maternity leave, Diggins-Smith wasn’t named an All-Star in 2024 and was left out of most conversations regarding the league’s top guards.

From the moment Unrivaled began, it became clear that Diggins-Smith was on a mission. She hit the league’s first game-winner and so far has averaged 18.5 points, 4.9 assists, and 1.6 steals. Her strong individual play has been a big part of why the Lunar Owls are a league-best 11-1 this season.

Chelsea Gray, Rose Club

Chelsea Gray is a six-time All-Star and US Olympic gold medalist. Still, after a down year with the Las Vegas Aces last year, some speculated whether the 32-year-old’s best days were behind her.

That doesn’t appear to be the case. Not only has Gray had a superb season, she’s a realistic MVP candidate and is largely responsible for the Rose Club’s surge up the Unrivaled standings. Gray is averaging 21.3 points, 5.6 assists, and 1.1 steals per game this season — and she’s eclipsed 26 points in 6 of her last 7 games. She walks away from Unrivaled having re-established herself as one of the league’s elite players.

Brittney Griner, Phantom Club

Many wondered how Brittney Griner’s game would translate to full-court 3-on-3. The results have been great, despite the Phantom’s lack of team success. Griner is averaging 16.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per night. She’s also shown a willingness to take the three-ball, which could greatly benefit the Atlanta Dream next season. (Griner has hit her last three attempts from behind the arc).

Perhaps most importantly, while many have missed substantial time during Unrivaled, the 34-year-old-old has played in all 12 of the Phantom’s games.

Aaliyah Edwards, Mist Club

Aaliyah Edwards is fresh off of a rookie season with the Washington Mystics that saw her average 7.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per night. Edwards has had a superb Unrivaled season. She’s averaging 8.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game and has shot above 50% from the field in all but two games this season. Moreover, she dominated Unrivaled’s 1v1 tournament, finishing as the runner-up in a three-game series to Napheesa Collier. Playing for the Mystics last year, the 6’3 forward went a bit under the radar. But after she handily defeated three of the best scorers in the game — Breanna Stewart, Allisha Gray, and Arike Ogunbowale — she put her name on the map in a new way.
