The 2024 Paris Olympics is hosting the most talented international basketball tournament ever, and star-power goes well beyond Team USA. The days of the 1992 Dream Team facing only five NBA players on their way to gold are long over. Basketball is truly an international sport these days, and even with the United States sending a loaded roster, the three best players in the event are competing for other countries.
The Americans remain the favorite in the tournament for good reason. LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant form one of the greatest team foundations the sport has ever seen. The U.S. had a couple close calls in their tune-up slate, but no one has been able to beat them yet. With the knockout stages looming, though, an upset is always possible in a single-elimination tournament.
SB Nation has already ranked the 12 teams in the Olympic men’s basketball tournament by who is most likely to win gold. We also have a list of the 50 best players in the field. With Nikola Jokic leading Serbia, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading Canada, and Franz and Moritz Wagner leading Germany, there will be no easy matchups once the knockout stage begins. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Paris Olympics men’s basketball tournament.
Olympic basketball format and rules
- The Olympic basketball tournament starts with group play. Teams play everyone in their group one time. The teams with the two best records out of each group advance to the knockout round.
- The first tiebreaker in group play is head-to-head results. If there’s a three-way tie, point-differential is used to determined who makes it through.
- The knockout rounds are a single-elimination tournament with 16 teams. The two highest-ranked teams are placed on opposite ends of the bracket. Teams can not play another team from their group in the quarterfinals.
